Borts Mintorts (SF)
"Headliners Borts Minorts defy simple description. See, there's this guy in a hooded white unitard and a headset mic who sings and flails and contorts — he might be an alien or an android, but it's doubtful anything but an actual human would be able to bring such pure and bizarre joy to the stage. Equally enthusiastic are the Borts backup dancers, who flaunt leotards and fishnets (and the occasional pair of lederhosen), and whose energetic choreography demonstrates limber limbs and an admirable appreciation of jazz hands. Borts's music is similarly befuddling, in the best possible way — a combination of samples, keyboards, horns, drums, theremin, slide whistles, a single-stringed bass made out of a snow ski, and god knows what else, but I guarantee you'll not see anything as sense-assaultingly entertaining this leap year, or any other year." - CHERYL EDDY

Aleks and the Drummer
Underground artists—and their press agents—love to claim that their music "defies categorization," but rarely does that ego-stroking description actually hold up. Aleks and The Drummer is one band that's worthy of the label. Led by Aleksandra Tomaszewska (toh-ma-SHEV-ska) on vocals and Farfisa organ and backed by the steady beat of Deric Criss, the duo is one of the most original acts to come out of the local music scene in the past few years.

The pairing of just drums and organ gives the band a refreshingly minimalist, yet powerful, aesthetic accentuated by Tomaszewska's hauntingly beautiful vocals, sung in both English and her native Polish. Critics and fans have used such descriptors as hypnotizing, wicked, intricate and even "Victorian" to describe the resulting music. The band may have summed it up best on its Myspace page, listing its influences as "heartbeats, silences and explosives."
